Choosing an immigration solicitor
Immigration solicitors help with visa applications, settlement and indefinite leave to remain, British citizenship, appeals to the immigration tribunal, and sponsor licences for employers who recruit from abroad. They prepare the forms and evidence and can represent you, but they do not make the decision (GOV.UK).
Anyone who gives immigration advice must be registered with the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) or be a member of an approved professional body (GOV.UK). Solicitors are regulated by the SRA. Check before you pay: GOV.UK warns that you cannot get your money back if an adviser is not regulated.
Fees are published for much of this work. A firm that offers immigration applications, other than asylum applications, must publish its prices and what they cover (SRA). Home Office fees, and for some routes the Immigration Health Surcharge, are paid on top of the firm's fee.
What to ask a firm
- Ask who will do the work and who supervises it
- Ask for a written quote or estimate, with what is and is not included, before anything starts
- Ask how often you will get updates and by what route
- Check the firm and the solicitor on the SRA register

Questions people ask
Do I need a solicitor for a visa application?
No. You can apply yourself. Advisers help you pick the right route, fill in the forms and prepare evidence, and can represent you at a tribunal (GOV.UK). A solicitor is most useful after a refusal, for a complicated history, or for an appeal.
How do I check an immigration adviser is allowed to advise me?
Use the IAA Adviser Finder on GOV.UK for registered advisers, and the SRA register for solicitors. GOV.UK keeps a list of advisers who are banned from giving immigration advice.
How much does an immigration solicitor cost?
It depends on the route and how complex the case is. Firms that offer immigration applications must publish their prices (SRA), so you can compare them. Remember that Home Office fees are paid separately.
I missed the EU Settlement Scheme deadline. Can I still apply?
Possibly. If you were living in the UK by 31 December 2020, you can still apply if you have reasonable grounds for missing the deadline, such as illness (GOV.UK).
