Getting advice about a problem at work
Employment solicitors advise employees on dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, unpaid wages and settlement agreements, and advise employers on contracts, disciplinary processes and tribunal claims brought against them.
Time limits are short, so take advice early. For a claim to an employment tribunal you usually have 6 months if the problem happened on or after 1 October 2026, and 3 months if it happened before that date. For unfair dismissal the clock starts on the day your employment ended (GOV.UK). Before you can make most claims you must tell Acas, and the time limit is put on hold while Acas tries to help you settle.
Prices are easier to compare than in many areas of law. A firm that offers to bring or defend employment tribunal claims for unfair or wrongful dismissal must publish its prices and what they include (SRA).
What to ask a firm
- Ask who will do the work and who supervises it
- Ask for a written quote or estimate, with what is and is not included, before anything starts
- Ask how often you will get updates and by what route
- Check the firm and the solicitor on the SRA register

Questions people ask
How long do I have to make an employment tribunal claim?
Usually 6 months if the problem happened on or after 1 October 2026, or 3 months if it happened before. The period runs from the end of your employment for unfair dismissal, and from the most recent incident for discrimination (GOV.UK). Contacting Acas pauses the clock.
Do I have to contact Acas first?
For most claims, yes. You must tell Acas before you make a claim to an employment tribunal (GOV.UK). Early conciliation through Acas is free and can settle the dispute without a hearing.
Can I get free employment law advice?
Acas gives free information and early conciliation. Legal aid does not cover employment disputes unless you are being discriminated against (GOV.UK). Some firms offer a free first call, and some take claims on a no win, no fee basis; ask what you would pay if you lose.
I was dismissed for whistleblowing. Is there anything urgent?
Yes. If you were dismissed for whistleblowing, trade union activity or acting as a workers' representative, you may be able to apply for interim relief to keep your pay until the case is decided, but you must claim within 7 days of being dismissed (GOV.UK).
