Which kind of solicitor do I need?

Most solicitors specialise, so pick the area of law first. Buying, selling or remortgaging a home is conveyancing. Divorce, separation, money after a relationship ends and arrangements for children are family law. Making a will or dealing with the estate of someone who has died is wills and probate, and choosing who can make decisions for you if you lose capacity is a lasting power of attorney.

A dismissal, a settlement agreement or discrimination at work is employment law, where tribunal time limits are short. A claim after an accident that was someone else’s fault is personal injury. Visas, settlement and citizenship are immigration, and tenancy agreements, rent arrears, disrepair and possession claims are landlord and tenant work.

Each service page explains the rules that matter for that work, with links to GOV.UK and the SRA, answers the questions people ask most, and lists the firms that offer it. If your problem covers more than one area, such as selling the family home during a divorce, ask each firm on your shortlist whether it handles both.

Questions people ask

Can one solicitor deal with everything?

Some firms cover several areas of law, but individual solicitors usually specialise. A firm can pass your matter to a colleague in another team, so ask who will actually handle each part.

Which services must have published prices?

For individuals, SRA rules require firms that offer them to publish prices for residential conveyancing, uncontested probate, employment tribunal claims for unfair or wrongful dismissal, immigration applications other than asylum, and summary motoring offences (SRA, transparency in price and service).

My area of law is not listed. Where do I look?

We cover these eight areas of law for now. If you have been arrested or charged with a crime, legal aid works differently, and GOV.UK explains how to get it. Citizens Advice can point you to the right kind of adviser for other problems.
